Important: BRPs have been replaced by eVisas

UK Biometric Residence Permits stopped being issued on 31 October 2024. All BRPs have now expired, and UK immigration status is generally proved through an eVisa and the official online share-code service. Translating an old BRP does not replace digital proof of current UK immigration status.

This translation service may still be relevant when an existing or expired BRP is specifically requested for an overseas organisation, legal matter, historical record or other administrative purpose. Ask the receiving organisation whether it needs a certified translation of the old card before ordering. Read current GOV.UK BRP guidance.

What this service is for

Do You Actually Need a BRP Card Translation?

A UK-issued BRP is already in English. It therefore does not normally need translating for a UK authority simply because it is a BRP.

You may, however, need a UK BRP translated into another language when it is being presented overseas, included in a foreign legal or administrative file, or specifically requested by a non-English-speaking organisation.

Alternatively, you may have a residence permit issued by another country that needs to be translated into English for a UK organisation or application. We can review the document and the receiving organisation's instructions before you order.

Document Typical language direction What to check
UK BRP card English into another language Confirm that the overseas or foreign-language recipient actually requires a translation.
Foreign residence permit Foreign language into English Send the recipient's translation and certification requirements where available.
Foreign supporting evidence for UK immigration Foreign language into English The supporting document may need certified translation rather than the UK BRP itself.
Current UK immigration status Usually accessed digitally BRPs have been replaced by eVisas, so use current GOV.UK guidance when proving status.

What Information on a BRP Can Be Translated?

The translation should allow the receiving organisation to compare the translated information with the physical card clearly and consistently.

  • Holder's name
  • Permit number
  • Issue date
  • Expiry date
  • Place of issue
  • Permit or status type
  • Remarks and conditions
  • Visible reference information

Names, dates and reference numbers are treated carefully because inconsistent spellings or formats can create problems when the translated card is compared with passports, certificates and other official records.

Browse other document translation services if the BRP forms part of a larger set of identity or immigration documents.

Front and reverse

Send Both Sides of the Card

A residence permit is not necessarily complete when only its front face is supplied. Information may continue onto the reverse, including personal details, nationality, additional remarks and machine-readable information.

Send a clear copy of every side containing information. If a section is unclear, damaged or obscured, mention this when requesting the quote rather than attempting to reconstruct the missing content yourself.

The same principle applies to residence permits issued outside the UK: provide every relevant face or page so the scope can be checked before translation begins.

Frequently asked questions

BRP Card Translation Questions

Answers to common questions about translating UK and overseas residence permits.

Are BRP cards still valid as proof of UK immigration status?

BRPs have been replaced by eVisas. Current UK immigration status is generally proved digitally, and GOV.UK should be checked for the latest rules concerning any remaining limited use of an expired BRP.

Why would I need an expired BRP translated?

An existing or expired BRP may still be relevant as a historical identity or immigration record, or where an overseas authority, solicitor, court, institution or other organisation specifically asks for the physical document in another language.

Can you translate both the front and back of a BRP?

Yes. Send clear images of both sides so all relevant visible information can be reviewed and included in the scope of the translation.

Can you translate a foreign residence permit into English?

Yes, residence permits issued outside the UK can be reviewed for translation into English. Send the document, language, destination and any certification instructions so the correct service can be confirmed.

Do I need my UK BRP translated for UKVI?

A UK-issued BRP is already in English. If your UK application includes supporting evidence written in another language, it may be those supporting documents that require certified English translations. Check the requirements for your specific application.

What does a certified translation include?

A certified translation normally includes a complete translation together with a certification statement and information identifying the translator or translation company. The exact format should follow the requirements of the organisation receiving the document.

How quickly can my BRP translation be completed?

Standard and express options are available depending on the language combination, document and translator availability. Send the card and your deadline to receive a confirmed turnaround before ordering.

Does certification guarantee that an authority will accept the translation?

No translation company can make the final acceptance decision for another organisation. Requirements differ by authority, country and purpose, so send any written instructions you have before the translation is prepared.
